10 good reasons why I don’t like face book

There are 10 very good reasons why I don’t necessarily like face book, but in order to answer this question you have to understand why I started to use Facebook in the first place and what I was using it for. I initially signed up for Face book to network with other designers.

I was a member of Face book for 9 months before I realized I didn’t really like face book and that it was pretty stupid. I came from MySpace I liked MySpace, but MySpace turned into a free dating service, in other words MySpace is what people call the new booty call, or the social hookup site. I was told that if I wanted to remain a respectable character on the social networking scene I had to give up my MySpace account, so I went ahead and moved my social suitcase over to Facebook.

I remember the day I began to create my wall on Facebook, even then I thought facebook was lame, I thought to myself, you can’t create and personalize your own page this is so uncreative? So here it begins my list of reasons why I really don’t like Facebook, and there are 10 really good ones.

Secondlife.com

10 good reasons why I don’t like face book

1.)The face book area is boring there’s no real personalization -

is whether you noticed it or not, Facebook makes sure that your page your wall never changes, sure you can write on it, but you can’t add music you can’t add your flare, you can’t add html or scripts, you can’t change the color- you can’t do anything but look at face books blue and white branding and their logo. Coincidence I think not. Facebook is not fun.

2.)There is no Privacy on Facebook-

you have to use your real name and can’t use a nickname. Facebook communicated your activity behind your back and messages and inboxes are constantly flooded with spam, even after unblocking a friend and putting all her messages as spam I still continued to receive spam messages from this individual. I use facebook as a means of networking and I don’t like using my real name, because I feel it’s dangerous to give out personnel info. For instance just with someone’s name I can look up where they live in about 5 seconds. If I can do things like that serial killers and stalkers can to.

3.)Facebook is a time waster by unprofessional individuals-

Most people on facebook are not professionals rather they are wasting time playing useless games like Yoville, Farmville and mafia wars, how old are you? It just irritated me how people would get excited because they found some new key or element in their little farm world. I don’t want or need to network with someone who spends his day in a cyber farm world. I was asked to join once and explained that I had much more important things to do. I never had one person on my Facebook with anything intelligent to say, and the ones that were intelligent didn’t say much because they were just there like me I guess to get some exposure to their site or blog.

4.)Constantly being spammed on facebook and the ridiculous fan requests-

The fourth reason is the mass amounts of request to join groups and to become a fan of some idiot with a fan page, but these groups never reached out to the people that joined. It was as if you’re being collected as a trophy and then they would move on, it was almost like a popularity contest if you ask me. Fan pages are created by these individuals who feel the need to validate that they are still alive I guess, thus they create fan pages to boost their imaginary popularity. The reason why I say imaginary, because it seems the only one their convincing that they are popular with these fan pages is themselves. I think people who have fan pages need help.

5.)Facebook has an extremely poor navigational structure and flawed design concept-

The fifth reason for sure is the inability to control anything really on your page. The lack of usability is horrible and the navigation is horrendous. I am a web designer/web developer and I am also a designer, a graphic artist to be exact, so if someone with my magnitude of technical knowledge can’t even navigate around face books page, obviously there is a huge design and navigational flaw within their site. I hate the fact that you have to allow or download a facebook app just to upload 1 picture, oh and you can’t bulk upload you have to do 1 freaking pic at a time. Very time consuming and the facebook site is slow as a turtle. There so many application problems and usability issues there’s too many to list, but the one thing that really annoys me is the fact you can’t drop html anywhere.

6.)Facebook Friend collectors-

The sixth most annoying thing about Facebook is its users, people will randomly just add you as a friend for no reason, they are not part of your crown you have nothing in common, they don’t even know you. I refer to people such as this in what I like to call friend collectors. Maybe these friend collectors don’t have any friends in real life, so they feel the need to take up a collection on facebook and boy do they collect.

7.)The mass amount of fake accounts that are on Facebook

The seventh reason- people on Facebook are really fake; Facebook is like your own personnel Pleasantville. Everyone gets to have the perfect life, the perfect business and the perfect relationship. Facebook is like an online resume of what you wish your life was like, rather than the profile info you just made up. Even businesses on facebook disgust me, they say they use facebook to communicate and remain loyal with their customers. Please name one business you know of who actually communicates with their customers on facebook, I’m sure Wal-Mart has better things to do than to write on walls all day as if. None of these businesses care and if they do they are only in it for marketing sakes duh.

8.)The vast amounts of Facebook applications that either don’t work or are useless-

The eighth reason -. I can’t stand all of the weird applications that people request that you sign up for its stupid and half of them don’t work anyways.

9.)Have not been able to find the un-friend button on Facebook-

The ninth reason- I still can’t find the button to un-friend people or the button to find people. Only if you have their e-mail address, I don’t know about you but I don’t go around memorizing e-mail addresses and neither should you, If you can remember at least 5 e-mail addresses of your friends in your head you should get a grant or something. Well it just seems the only people you do find on facebook are Lurkers, people looking for someone to buy their stupid e-book or sales pitch. Speaking of stupid e-books here is an example of a stupid e-book.

10.)Facebook deletes/disables accounts without warning for no apparent reason

- that means if you actually use your Facebook account you’ve probably been deleted or disabled more than once.
Number 10 – but this is really the number one thing that I really don’t like about face book. If you have ever been on MySpace you know that its slow as hell due to the mass traffic and activity right. Well MySpace doesn’t delete your account for using it to much in one day. Facebook however controls people’s bandwidth use by deleting their account if you say upload to many pics or write too much on your wall or comment to much, if you use facebook to much they will just disable your account or delete it with no warning whatsoever. There’s really no customer service to call, so you can’t get any of your images back or if you had some important contacts or information on facebook it’s gone. Plus whatever you wrote on others walls is deleted as well. So whatever you did on Facebook is a big fucking waste of time. And so to conclude facebook is a big waste of time and that’s all it really is.

I am suggesting that someone bright comes out with something new, something better than MySpace and Facebook, and understand while most of the people on social networking sites are there to social the other half is there to market or pursue the social bugs, so we need a system that will work seamlessly with the two. My idea is networking sites where friends aren’t picked at all you get a randomly new set of friends every 30 days based on profile criteria, interest and things of such nature, kinda like a friend stumble site.

I feel this is a great way to enforce that all networking be random and in a non predatory way. For example, the way its set up now, if you want to find a certain group of people you want to target, you can on any social networking site, “you can predatorily target anyone on social networking sites.” This is the main people are presumably guarded fake or standoffish and less forth coming with profile info.

Facebook and MySpace are not real social environments, and any marketing data used from these sites are flawed, because a lot of the people on these sites just aren’t being truthful. That’s why my idea of a random environment would propose a better way for individuals really wanting to socialize and or network with people who share a common goal or interest. In social stumble No one is able to see anyone’s profile therefore they have nothing to lie about, the profile data is only used to randomly pick people that would be a good fit.

This could open a lot of doors for people as far as networking goes, and no one would have to be afraid of being targeted by marketers and salesmen, it would be pure innocent good social connections, and that’s how it should be. You see your friends and family and co workers everyday so why do you need to face book or MySpace them? People really need something like what I’m proposing here it would be a huge hit I bet my life on it.

Quality Web Hosting at the Best Price

The best free hosting companies are ones that a lot of people are unaware of, and even if you visit these sites you will find that the free hosting is hidden, or really hard to find. It will take a lot of time and searching on Google, yahoo or Bing’s search engines to come up with results.

So I have written this short guide on how to assist people who want to find the best free hosting sites, without the hassle of all the searching involved. So if you want to find the best free hosting, you will first need to understand what types of free hosting there is.

Surprisingly there are several options for free hosting, the fact remains though that hosting companies or providers do not want you to know about these free resources because then they would lose lots of money. However the point is for us to spend the least amount of money possible on hosting our website.

So with that being said, some of the options you have on the table are as follows:

1.) Free hosting with ads

2.) Free hosting with ads when you purchase a domain

3.) Free social hosting, like Myspace or Facebook

4.) Free shared hosting

5.) A form of shared sub domain such as ” your website name or title at someone else’s domain”

Free hosting with ads, there are plenty of sites like this, one in particular is the website Lycos; which you can sign up for a free account and host your own website for free. There are many more like this one such as brave host, tripod, dot easy and freewebspace.net. A Google search will turn up many others as well, I just have listed the most popular or best free hosting sites.

Another way to get free web hosting is by purchasing a domain name, a lot of hosting companies don’t tell you this but when you purchase a domain you automatically get free ad hosting. Which means it’s the same as the paid hosting packages; it just has advertisement banners on them.

You can easily hide the banner if you are really knowledgeable at CSS, or you can just Google the term hiding ads on go daddy free hosted sites. I think go daddy is the best free hosting there is, because you can easily cover the ads and so therefore there’s really no difference between the paid and non paid.

If you don’t know what MySpace or face book is than you have probably been living under a rock for the last decade. Just a brief recap in case you are unaware of the two major website communities. MySpace allows you to easily create and customize your own web space, whereas face book lets you create a wall. MySpace is for the more creative type where face book is geared toward the less technically savvy, in other words face book requires no html knowledge to update your page.

As far as social hosting goes I think my space is the best. MySpace, just has more options and you can customize the look and feel just like a real website whereas face book is just face book. I think the only reason why more people use face book is because they are non technical, but if they were technical they would be using MySpace instead.

Free shared hosting is with sites like Yola, in my opinion I think Yola is the best free hosting there is in regards to shared hosting. You can sign up for a free account by visiting Yola.com

Sub domains and hosting for free on others sub domains is probably the most popular way to get the best free web hosting, Sub domains are those that you create with a domain name that you already own. If you have a hosting provider like host gator you can create an unlimited amount of sub domains for free, you can also host as many domains as you want absolutely free.

I use Hostgator and have been using them for many years, they are the absolute best hosting out there. I am a professional web designer and developer and I have been hosting websites for over 10 years, so I know a good host when I see one.

I chose host gator as the best free hosting overall, because with the baby plan you can host millions of domains, with virtually no restrictions, in fact everything is pretty much unlimited. You only have to pay seven dollars and ninety five cents a month, you can recoup that money by reselling or giving away your own sub domains in an effort to drive traffic to your site. The possibilities are limitless.

It’s the only hosting company I know of where you can host unlimited domains, get unlimited bandwidth and disk space for less than a mc Donald’s happy meal.

I use Hostgator and have been using them for many years, they are the absolute best hosting out there. I am a professional web designer and developer and I have been hosting websites for over 10 years, so I know a good host when I see one.

An amazing website builder. Amazingly free.

Emails for Small Business with Constant Contact

Creating Your Own Email Newsletter

Do you have a system to collect prospect information and a method of communicating with these potential customers? If not, then you need one. If you do, how effective is your system in turning your prospects into customers?

Having an email newsletter is a very effective method of collecting information from your prospects. If you do not have an email newsletter then you are missing out on a very effective medium for turning your prospects into customers and your customers into lifetime prospects. No matter whether you sell a product, a service, or earn revenue through advertising, and no matter what topic your web site is on, you can benefit by having a newsletter.

So how do you create a newsletter? First, we will talk about how to set up a newsletter for a small list. Skip below to “Automating your subscribe and unsubscribe requests” if you have a list with more than one hundred subscribers or you would like to use features such as automatic subscriber management, multiple lists, mail merge personalization, bounceback handling, or HTML email.

Creating a small email newsletter for free

If you have a very small list (less than 100 subscribers) you can set things up without paying a dime. Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. A form on your website to collect the prospects’ names and email addresses.
  2. The FormMail.cgi script in your cgi-bin to covert the submitted information into a readable format.
  3. An email program such as Eudora or Outlook that allows you to create a mailing list or send blind carbon copy (BCC) emails. If you have a computer running Windows, you will most likely have a copy of the email client Outlook Express already on your computer. You can download a free copy of Eudora from http://www.eudora.com.

First, check to make sure your hosting company has provided you with FormMail.cgi. Almost all do. Use a program such as WS_FTP or Cute FTP to log in to your domain via file transfer protocol (FTP) and open up the folder called cgi-bin. Inside should be FormMail.cgi. If you cannot find the file, email your host to inquire or search for a copy online.

If it is there, then you can proceed to adding the form to your website that will collect the name and email address of each prospect. Open up your web page editor (such as Dreamweaver or FrontPage) and add the following HTML code in the location you want the form to be.

iContact.com - Email Marketing Service

Note: Be sure to change yourdomain.com to your actual website address in the above code.

Now, save the page and upload it to your server via your FTP program.

Whenever someone visits your page and puts in their name and email and hits submit an email will be sent to you (or whatever address you put for the recipient value) with their details.

When you receive these emails, simply add this person to your list. You can keep your list using the mailing list feature of Outlook or Eudora email clients.

To send out your newsletter simply write it in your email client and select your list as the recipient. The exact method will vary slightly depending on which email program you are using. If you run into any problems check the help file.

In each email you send be sure to have a way for recipients to unsubscribe. You can simply put in the following text:

“To unsubscribe send an email to you@yourdomain.com with the word “Remove” in the subject.”

You could also send subscribers to an unsubscribe form on your website if you wished. Do remember, however, you will have to manage all your unsubscribe requests by hand.

Automating your subscribe and unsubscribe requests

Soon, however, managing your subscribe and unsubscribe requests by hand will start to take quite a bit of your time. Your time is much better spent growing your newsletter and marketing your business than manually adding and subtracting emails from your list. Once your list grows to be bigger than about one hundred subscribers, having an automatic system in place is a necessity.

So how can you set things up so everything is handled automatically? Well, you need to use email list management software.

Email list management software is able to handle subscribe and unsubscribe requests automatically and send out your emails to your each of your subscribers at the touch of one button. This will save you many hours of your time.

Choosing an Email list management Program

Besides handling subscribe/unsubscribe requests and sending out emails, what other features should you look for in email list management software?

Web based versus PC Based

Some email list management programs are PC based, meaning they are programs that you must download and install on your computer, and some are web based. Web based software enables you to access your lists and send out newsletters from any computer and runs right through your Internet browser.

If you ever travel or want to be able to access your lists from more than one computer, say, at home and at the office, then be sure to select software that is web based.

Personalization of Emails

Another powerful feature of many email list management programs is the ability to use mail merge capabilities to personalize each email that you send. In other words, you could put the following in the subject line:

[fname], Your June Garden Tips Newsletter

and if your subscriber’s first name was Betty she would see in her inbox:

Betty, Your June Garden Tips Newsletter

This personalization of your emails will increase readership and enable you to develop a one-on-one relationship with each subscriber, begin to earn their trust, and build rapport. This will be an essential part of turning your prospects into customers and your customers into lifetime evangelizers who will tell all their friends about your wonderful product or service.
You may also want to mail merge additional fields into your messages besides first name and last name. In selecting your software, be sure to look for the ability to have a number of custom mail merge fields. This can be very powerful. With this capability you could send an email such as:

[fname],

I wanted to personally thank you for your purchase of [product] on [date]. How are you doing with [product]? Do let me know if I can answer any questions.

Warm regards,
Bill Jennison, President
Garden Feeds, Inc.
garden@growgarden.com
http://www.growgarden.com

The mail merge feature would insert the proper entry in each field straight from your database and send all your emails out in a matter of seconds.

Bounceback email handling
Bouncebacks are emails that are sent to email accounts that no longer exist or are full. Essentially, the mail server that handles the delivery of the email will send you a response stating that your message did not make it. All email list management software programs are able to manage subscribe and unsubscribe requests and send out messages, however many of these are unable to effectively manage bouncebacks.
Without integrated bounceback email handling all the non-deliverable emails will be sent back to you. Once you start to develop a larger list it can be rather bothersome to receive a few hundred emails each time you send out a mailing.   Ideally, the email software you use will be able to manage your bouncebacks for you. Whenever a bounceback is received, the software makes a note of the address and if another bounceback is received the email address will be sent to a list of dead addresses. This remove capability is very important since if you continuously send out emails with many bouncebacks you may be blacklisted by some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) as a spammer. This is surely something you want to avoid.
 HTML email

The ability to send out HTML emails has been around for quite some time. Most good email list management programs support the ability to send out messages that include graphics and formatted text. This is surely something you’ll want to look for.

However, not all of your users have the ability to view email messages in HTML format. This percentage is usually between 10-20%. Instead of seeing your aesthetically pleasing email they might see a string of meaningless code. Using most email list management programs, these 10-20% of users will open up emails from you and be very inclined to unsubscribe or confuse your mail as spam.

To avoid this, look for programs that use multi-part MIME to send out messages. When you send an HTML email in multi-part MIME, users who do not have the ability to view HTML messages will receive the email in the usual text format.

 What I Use
I use  Constant contact you can download a free 60 day trial here http://www.constantcontact.com  it is by far  the best e-mail marketing campaign out there, and it will surely do the job for you.

Here’s a quick review of what we’ve learned.

1. Email newsletters are a very effective way of turning prospects into customers and customers into lifetime clients.

2. If you have a small list you can create an email newsletter for free by placing a form on your website, using FormMail.cgi to manage subscribe requests, and using the mailing list feature or BCC field in email clients such as Outlook or Eudora.    3. With larger lists managing subscribe and unsubscribe requests can take quite a bit of time. To manage these requests automatically you can use email list management software. 4. When selecting software to manage your list, look for programs that are web based, give you the ability to send personalized emails, handle your bouncebacks, and enable you to send HTML email.

 5. A good email list management program that has all of the above features is  Constant contact you can download a free 60 day trial here http://www.constantcontact.com  it is by far  the best e-mail marketing campaign out there, and it will surely do the job for you.

99 Graphic designs resources for 2010!

Software, Books & More

99 Graphic design in the year 2010

99 Graphic Designs was a dead domain with no traffic on it whatsoever and was brought it back to life with a well thought out marketing campaign, a lot of love and shear devotion and time. In the few months that we have re established the domain we went from a Page Rank of zero to a Page Rank of 3. We did not pay for advertising, nor did we pay someone else to write our articles or content. We created the site and its content merely from scratch. Some of the content does stray a little from graphic and web design but the content itself is very useful none the less.

I want to thank each and every one of our readers, and sites that link to us and share our love of our articles. We pride ourselves in sharing, so anyone can use are articles and distribute them as they see fit as long as they credit our site, which by the way helps promote our site in one way or another.
We have some unfinished content I know and we are working on getting more stuff up. We have been working on some other projects and as soon as they are 100% complete we will once again focus more energy on the site. We have uploaded some new things, and we are still adding new content, just not on a daily or weekly basis.

Adobe Education Store

We have over 116 members that have joined us in the 4 months that we have re-launched the site we experience 300-400 visitors per day and the numbers climb every month. I have noticed that the participation of our visitors is not where we’d like it to be. I am not going to create fake comments like so many other sites and I am not going to make this into some cheap rendition of what I want it to be. So in the year 2010 we will focus on, finding an easier way for users to comment and to give incentive for doing so, also we are going to eliminate administrative approval, and anything that has do to with captcha.

I personally hate captcha, a lot of people get spam regardless of captcha, 90% of spam comes from the person you actually gave your e-mail address too. So with that being said captcha doesn’t really make a whole lot if since if you ask me. Hers one thing I am sure of 99 Graphic designs, will not sell your info to any third party, In fact people who have to buy e-mail addresses are not marketing effectively in my opinion. We don’t buy our visitors, if you come to our site it’s because you enjoy being here. Forcing users to do what you want them to do will only end bad.

So 99 Graphic designs as a clear agenda in 2010 we are going to engage our readers, so that they will want to participate and discuss what’s being written. You will see more controversial topics, a lot more videos that are geared more at analyzing design trends. We are in the process of putting together a seminar. The seminar is primarily to teach our users, to learn how to start a site with no money, no web design or computer skills and take that knowledge and develop their own site into a PR3 or higher in 4 months of less using no linking tricks, or paid advertising. We will also incorporate some design tips and tricks, and a whole bunch of tricks of the trades that you just won’t be able to find on a book or in a classroom.

StartLogic - Affordable Webhosting

The Seminar will cost roughly $600 and there will be maximum attendees of 30, so spaces are very limited. The course will be 8 hours and will also include an e-book and other literature to aid the user in getting started. We do offer support on our forums absolutely free so we do answer and all questions the user might have. We did not initially want to charge for the seminar; however this is kind of like our car wash or fundraiser for our website. We are using the proceeds to pay for the cost of maintaining the site. So far we have had no donations from the community or public so I’m afraid we are going to have to raise the money somehow.

We did look into adsense and affiliate marketing, however we did not like the cluttered look of all the ads, we do have a few sponsors to the right column and we actually use 90% of what we offer. We believe that you shouldn’t promote something you wouldn’t use yourself. So in the year 2010 we are going to put some effort into an economic support system to maintain the site as it is a lot of work as some of you web masters already knows. But we really don’t get a lot of action so by then end of 2010 if they haven’t gotten a lot of action, they too I’m afraid will come down and be replaced with ads that are paid for annually, that means you could rent a spot to advertise your own business right here. I predict by 2011 we will at a Page rank of 7 or a Page rank of 8. That means by 2011 we will have over 10,000 visitors a day.

99 graphic designs ultimate goal this year is not to gain a lot of traffic, our number one goal this year is to find away to get our readers to respond, give feedback. We care about our readers and want to know what kinds of topics they would like to see, whether or not they like something. We really want to feel close to our readers, we want to laugh and joke together; I want to create a community where everyone shares and enjoys regardless of profit or earnings. I want this site to be somewhere were designers can go and get real answers from experts or people who are just a little more knowledgeable than they are.

I remember having a lot of questions when I was a junior designer and I didn’t have anyone who I could ask. I later learned the answer by accident and it was so simple, it was an answer that could literally be uttered in a matter of seconds, versus searching and combing through the internet portals and books. Or even worse paying for an answer. I want 99 graphic designs to be a place where a designer can go for anything they need.
